PhD studentships in programming languages, provenance, data management

I am currently advertising two PhD studentships, on topics spanning programming languages, provenance, and data management, to start in fall 2016.

Both of these studentships are fully funded for applicants of any nationality (in contrast to many UK PhD studentships which are only funded up to the UK/EU tuition level, and do not cover full tuition fees for students from outside the European Union.)

Skye: A programming language bridging theory and practice for scientific data curation

I expect to offer a 4-year PhD or Master's + PhD studentship on this project starting in 2016 and another starting in 2017. This project builds on recent work on language-integrated query and provenance. Postdoctoral positions will also be advertised on this project soon.

This project is generously funded by the European Research Council via a Consolidator Grant.

Declarative Programming for Data Science

A 4-year Master's + PhD studentship in the Edinburgh Centre for Doctoral Training in Data Science.  The topic of this studentship is open-ended, but should be broadly connected to declarative (e.g. functional, logic programming) techniques applied to databases, machine learning, bidirectional transformations, Web programming or any other aspect of data science.

This studentship is generously co-funded by LogicBlox, Inc. and EPSRC via the Edinburgh Centre for Doctoral Training in Data Science.
